If you’ve had reflux for a while, you’ve probably already done the rounds. Seen the doctor. Tried the PPIs. Cut out coffee, tomatoes, chocolate, and half the things you used to enjoy. And you’re still clearing your throat twenty times a day, or still waking at 2am with burning in your chest, wondering what on earth is going on.

I know that feeling because I lived in it for years.

Here’s the thing I wish someone had told me sooner: it’s almost never that you haven’t tried hard enough. It’s that the advice you were given didn’t fit the problem in front of it.

That’s most obvious with silent reflux. LPR gets treated as though it’s just GERD that went north — same pills, same food list, same shrug when it doesn’t work. But it plays by its own rules. Pepsin behaves differently in the throat, the pH thresholds are different, timing matters more, and acid suppression alone often isn’t the answer. Miss all that and you can do everything “right” and still get nowhere. It’s the single most misunderstood version of reflux, and it’s where I’ve done most of my work.

But the same principle applies right across the board. Classic heartburn and GERD are better understood, yet plenty of people still end up stuck on a PPI indefinitely with nobody explaining what’s actually driving it, whether they can come off, or what to do about the reflux that breaks through anyway. And a fair few people have both — chest symptoms and throat symptoms at once — and get bounced between specialists who each only look at their half of it.

Wherever you sit on that spectrum, that’s what these calls are for. Time with someone who’s read the research, had the condition, and sat with hundreds of people in exactly your position — and who’ll give you a straight answer instead of another leaflet.

Who you’ll be talking to

David G.— Medical journalist, reflux researcher, and former sufferer

I’m not a gastroenterologist and I won’t pretend to be one. What I am is someone who has spent over a decade reading the reflux literature properly — the studies most people never see, the ones that explain why silent reflux behaves so differently from heartburn — and translating it into something you can actually use. Silent reflux is where I’ve gone deepest, but I’ve spent just as long on GERD and heartburn, because in practice they overlap far more than the textbooks suggest.

I started because I had it myself. Years of throat clearing, a voice that came and went, and a stack of advice that didn’t work. Working out my own way through it turned into Wipeout Reflux, which now reaches thousands of people a month, and into hundreds of one-to-one calls with people who’d hit the same wall.

So when we talk, you’re getting two things at once: someone who knows the evidence, and someone who knows what 3am feels like when your throat won’t settle. I’ll be straight with you about what’s likely to help, what probably won’t, and when the honest answer is that you need a doctor rather than me.

What I can help you with

Silent reflux is my specialism, but I work with the full range — LPR, GERD, classic heartburn, and the many people who have some combination of all three. These are the things that come up most:

  • Working out what you’re actually dealing with — LPR, GERD, both at once, non-acid reflux, or something that’s being mistaken for reflux entirely.
  • The throat symptoms nobody explains properly — the lump, the constant clearing, hoarseness, post-nasal drip, the cough that won’t quit, breathing that feels tight.
  • Heartburn and chest symptoms that keep coming back — burning, regurgitation, that pressure behind the breastbone, and reflux that breaks through even on medication.
  • Getting off PPIs without the rebound — how to taper properly, what to expect, and what to put in place before you start so it doesn’t backfire.
  • Sorting out the food chaos — what genuinely matters, what doesn’t, and how to stop living on an ever-shrinking list of “safe” foods.
  • Alginates, supplements and what’s worth your money — Gaviscon Advance, how and when to take it, and which supplements have real evidence behind them.
  • Night-time reflux and sleep — positioning, timing, and why you wake up feeling worse than when you went to bed.
  • Knowing what to ask for next — which tests are worth pushing for, which are a dead end, and how to have a more productive conversation with your doctor.
  • A plan when you’ve plateaued — you improved, then stalled, and can’t work out what’s left to change.

You set the agenda. If you want to spend the whole call on one thing, that’s fine. If you want a full review from the top, that’s fine too.

How it works

We meet online over Google Meet. You’ll get a link in your email — no account or software needed, it opens straight in your browser. I’ll ask about your symptoms, your history, what you’re taking, what you eat, and what you’ve already tried. Then we build a plan together, out loud, so you understand not just what to do but why it should work for you specifically.

No script, no upsell, no vague “everyone’s different” hand-waving. Just a clear conversation and a practical route forward.

You’ll get a written summary afterwards. With the Full Consultation and the Complete Reflux Recovery Plan, I write everything up and send it over — your plan, the reasoning behind each step, dosages and timings, and what to do if something doesn’t land. It’s yours to keep, work through at your own pace, and share with your doctor if you want to. Most people tell me this is the part they end up using the most.

What people say after a call

★★★★★

After years of constant throat clearing, morning sore throat, and useless PPIs, David was the first person who actually explained what LPR was and gave me a simple, personalised plan. Within weeks the chronic swelling and night-time coughing were gone. I sleep through the night and feel like myself again.

★★★★★

I’d seen multiple doctors who just prescribed more acid blockers. David’s consultation was the first time someone really listened, identified the triggers I’d been missing, and walked me through realistic diet and lifestyle changes. My symptoms dropped dramatically, I got off the daily medication, and I finally understand how to keep it under control long-term.

★★★★★

The constant lump-in-throat feeling, hoarseness, and fear of eating out controlled my life. After following David’s tailored recommendations, those symptoms are almost completely gone. I can speak, eat, and sleep normally again — something I didn’t think was possible without surgery or endless meds.

Questions people usually ask

Which option should I pick?
If you’ve got one specific thing you’re stuck on — a PPI taper, a food question, whether your symptoms sound like LPR or GERD — the 30-minute Quick Consultation is plenty. If you want a proper review and a plan to follow, take the hour-long Full Consultation. If you’ve been at this for years, tried multiple things, or have a complicated history with tests and medications, the Complete Reflux Recovery Plan is the one that will actually get to the bottom of it — the follow-up call a few weeks later is where we adjust things once you’ve seen how your body responds. If you’re torn, just email me.
What if I’m not even sure it’s reflux?
That’s one of the most common reasons people book. A big part of these calls is working out what you’re actually dealing with — LPR, GERD, both, non-acid reflux, or something that’s being mistaken for reflux entirely. I’ll tell you honestly what your symptoms do and don’t fit, and if I think you need a specific test or a doctor rather than me, I’ll say so.
What’s in the written summary?
Everything we agree on the call, written up properly: your plan step by step, what to take and when, what to eat and why, what to expect week by week, and what to do if a particular step doesn’t work. It’s included with the Full Consultation and the Complete Reflux Recovery Plan. People tell me they refer back to it for months.
How quickly might I see a difference?
86% of people see an improvement within two weeks of following the recommendations, and 91% within three months. It depends on how consistently you stick with it and what’s driving your reflux in the first place — but most people notice something shifting fairly quickly.
When will the call happen?
Once you’ve booked, I’ll email you to arrange a time and send a Google Meet link once we’ve settled on a slot — most calls happen within a few days. If you need to speak sooner, add priority booking at checkout and I’ll guarantee a slot within 48 hours.
Is this medical advice?
No — I’m a medical journalist, not your doctor, and I won’t diagnose you or tell you to stop a prescribed medication. What I give you is evidence-based guidance and a practical plan, and I’ll always encourage you to keep your doctor in the loop, especially around anything involving medication.
Something else?
