Yes there are a couple alternatives, for example one is called Reflux Gourmet and is more accessible in countries like the US.

I, too, have high BP and am concerned about high sodium content (also the price to ship it from the UK). I just found your blog today, now, and I’m wondering if there is an alternative to the UK Gaviscon. You mentioned in 2020 you were looking into something else. Have you published anything on this and where might I find it. Thanks.

Hi — simple answer: **no, you can’t substitute alginate (like Gaviscon Advance) with eating seaweed.**

Alginate works because it’s been **processed and concentrated** into a form that reacts with stomach acid to create a thick “raft” barrier that physically blocks reflux. Eating seaweed won’t reliably create that same effect, and you’d never get a consistent dose.

And I understand why you’re worried, especially with your father’s history. Just remember: reflux doesn’t automatically mean cancer, but **it does mean you should take it seriously** and get properly checked (especially if symptoms are persistent, worsening, or you have swallowing issues). If you haven’t already, it’s worth asking your doctor about an endoscopy for peace of mind.

Hi David...since Alginate is a derivative of seaweed, can I substitute with straight Japanese seaweed? Simple questionm but just started on this acid reflux journey and its quite overwhelming. My father died of esophegal cancer, and I am very concerned.

Yes I agree with you it's far from perfect but arguably better than the other alternatives.

Definitely it can be very difficult. I would suggest giving melatonin a try. Search my blog for melatonin and you can read how it can help.
